Pottery and Such

Steve Mitchell Pottery
We spent the afternoon with Steve Mitchell, a fantastic potter, instructor and advocate for the arts. He was gracious enough to show us his studio and showroom. (The Holy Grail of pottery vases!) Pottery making requires time, skill, creativity, and patience, (Well great, I guess Amy's left out in the cold again...) but the finished product is remarkable. We also didn't realize how many events, classes, and artistic groups there were in the area for potters - young and old, beginners and experts. Steve mentioned several times throughout the afternoon that the Brambleton Center in Roanoke has become a great venue for the potters in the area. We looked into it, and indeed there are plenty of resources and classes there to accomodate any level of pottery/sculpture making.

To wrap up "Not your Grandmother's Craft", there are so many more activities and hobbies that could fall into the stereotypical category of being "grandma" things, such as quilting, scrapbooking, knitting; the list goes on and on. But what we will take away from this is that grandmothers have it good! There are many ways to enjoy all of these crafts; making them hip, fun and hopefully passing down our knowledge and love of our hobbies to our children and grandchildren! (And don't worry, Joey has already committed to making Christmas stockings for Amy's grandchildren.)
